Update The final version of 32 CFR Part 170, the rules for implementing the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) program, has been published to the Federal Register on October 15, 2024. 48 CFR contains contract guidelines for Defense organizations concerning compliance with CMMC. 48 CFR is expected to become final soon, thus, language around compliance with CMMC will begin appearing in requests for proposals and contract awards.

What is CMMC 2.0?

The Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) program is a Department of Defense (DoD) initiative that aims to improve the cybersecurity posture of DoD contractors and subcontractors. The CMMC program is aligned with DoD’s information security requirements and is designed to protect sensitive unclassified information that is shared between the DoD and its partners. The program provides the DoD with increased assurance that its contractors and subcontractors are meeting the cybersecurity requirements that apply to acquisition programs and systems that process controlled unclassified information.

The Cyber AB (Cyber Accreditation Body) is the official accreditation body for the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) Ecosystem. They are the sole authorized non-governmental partner of the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) in implementing and overseeing the CMMC conformance regime.

Tiered Model

The Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) is a program that requires companies entrusted with national security information to implement cybersecurity standards at progressively advanced levels.

Assessment Requirement

The Department uses CMMC assessments to ensure that contractors are meeting the cybersecurity standards required to handle sensitive information.

Contract Awarding

DoD contractors that handle sensitive unclassified DoD information will need to achieve a certain level of certification to be awarded contracts once CMMC is fully implemented.
